AGRICULTURE AND AGROINDUSTRY
Berat is well known for:
The Berat district has rich agriculture resources and tradition on agriculture and dairying. There are 6,000 Ha of plantations with approx. 700,000 olive trees with annual production of approx. 10,000 Tons, 150,000 fig trees with annual production of approx. 4,000 Tons and 500 Ha vineyards with annual production of approx. 10,000 Tons of grape.
Dry figs and edible olives of Berat are well known all over Albania and even abroad.
In Berat region, thanks to very favorable climate, are cultivated almost all fruits and vegetables: tomato, cucumber, peppers, peach, pear, etc. All of them get an annual production of some ten thousands of Tons.
In Berat region are growing many kinds of medical plants, which are exported abroad.
Today in Berat do exist a number of companies that are treating this kind of industry, producing figs, olives, olive oil, vine, alcoholic drinks and canned vegetables and fruits. Such a situation is a strong potential for economic development of the zone, as an indispensable sector for assuring qualitative products for tourism, but after the privatization of the land this sector is growing not at the required scale. There are missing or are insufficient the organization of farmers and the chains to link them with the respective industry for their products. There are efforts to perform this process from some relatively big and serious companies, but it needs to be involved respective structures to bring the process under control and to facilitate it, in manner that Berat to gain again its note position on production and trading agriculture and dairy products.
